Marvel’s supernatural anti-hero, Ghost Rider, was created entirely using Clip Studio on an iPad Pro 12.9 tablet — at 600 DPI file resolution and 11”x17” print size.
This was a fun piece to do. I enjoyed doing all those crosshatching lines and special effects. The art was inked with just one custom brush that I made back in 2020 when I started transitioning from Photoshop to Clip Studio for my comic book art production.
My fellow Comic Pros thought I was nuts for using an iPad Pro 12.9 for making digital comic art. They were adamant about making comics either with traditional pen and paper, or Photoshop and a Wacom Cintiq drawing monitor. Sure, at first, it felt too restrictive to work on a small tablet screen. But once I got used to the screen size of the iPad Pro, it felt liberating to create comics on a tablet. I am able to untether myself from the art table and/or the Wacom Cintiq and PC, and work anywhere I wish. Be it in bed or at a Starbucks café, I can take my comic production work with me wherever I feel like being creative.
Case in point, with the summer heatwave bearing down here in Southern California, I was able to leave the hot environment of my apartment and take my comic work with me to the local Barnes & Noble Bookstore. There, at the bookstore cafe, I started and completed this Ghost Rider artwork! Before the advent of the iPad Pro tablet, this was not possible. I would have to endure the heat in my apartment while chained to the Wacom Cintiq and PC.
While the iPad Pro may not be for everyone, but for me, it’s just the right size and hardware power for creating comic art anywhere I want to be.
